Sodus is in Wayne County. It has a population of about 8,000. The name comes from a native word for the bay in the eastern part of the town. The bay was called 'Assorodus' meaning 'silvery water'.
The town was formed in 1789. The town has two villages, one called Sodus, and one called Sodus Point. Sodus Point was established in 1794. The village of Sodus was established around 1809.
A Heluva Good! Country Store was located in Sodus. However both the cheese packaging plant and the Heluva Good! Country Store closed in June of 2015.
It is also believed that Sodus is the birthplace of Arbor Day, a holiday devoted to planting trees.
