Phelps is a town in Ontario County with about 7,000 residents. It is located on the western border of Seneca County and Southern border of Wayne Counties.
Phelps, formerly called 'Sullivan', was part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase in 1788. Oliver Phelps and Nathaniel Gorham bought the land from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The town and village got their name from one of the proprietors.
Formerly a center for the production of sauerkraut, Phelps is known sauerkraut capital of the world. 2016 marks their 50th anniversary of their annual sauerkraut festival.
