Ontario is located in the northwest corner of Wayne County. It has a population of about 10,000 and is about 32 square miles. Its name comes from the Great Lake that is north of the town.
The first settlers came in 1807. The town was then created in 1807. It was originally called "Town of Freetown". Soon after the name was changed to it's current. In 1811, iron ore was found and thus a thriving smelting operation arose, bringing more people to the area.
